BRISTOL - Successful graduates now have more opportunities to begin their apprenticeship careers in manufacturing.

Bristol Adult Education’s “Introduction to Manufacturing” program has become the first such in the state to be certified as a Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program. This was made possible by the Connecticut Department of Labor’s Office of Apprenticeship Training.

Lawrence Covino, Adult Ed supervisor, announced the certification Thursday, attributing the move to the efforts of city officials and representatives of the local manufacturing community.

“This is fantastic. This is positive news and recognition of the efforts of the entire community. It takes a village.” said Carbone on hearing the news.

The program will now “provide successful graduates with 200 hours of pre-apprenticeship certified time, as well as additional funding opportunities for future programs,” Covino said.

In a letter to the Office of Apprenticeship Training, he said the “comprehensive career technical education manufacturing program is offered as an elective to our students.”

Covino said certification means registered apprentice sponsor employers have agreed to award students that successfully complete the program course with 200 On Job Training registered apprenticeship credit hours.

“These attained hours may be credited toward manufacturing registered apprenticeship requirements, at the discretion of the registered apprenticeship employer sponsor, to individuals that may pursue a registered apprenticeship career in manufacturing post program completion,” he said.

A student may also earn additional OJT credits if registered with the Office of Apprenticeship Training and employed as a pre-apprentice with participating sponsor employers on a part-time basis as a program participant, high school student, and/or as part of a Work Based Learning release program that may be established by the office, the Bristol schools, and a registered apprenticeship employer sponsor, he added.

For now, during the current social distancing due to the coronavirus pandemic, “we continue to work remotely with our manufacturing students and await the opportunity to complete their training,” Covino said.
